ABOUT US
The Sussex Peasant is about local farmers, local producers, and fresh local food.
Our supply chain is refreshingly simple: from a Sussex farm, to our trucks, to you. We take pride in sharing the stories of our farmers, promoting the benefits of eating seasonally, and showcasing just how delicious, wholesome, and competitively priced fresh local food can be.
Visit our trucks, explore our media channels, and ask questions—discover firsthand how a better, more transparent food supply chain can transform the way we eat. We believe that by championing these dedicated producers, we help create a healthier and happier society.
WHAT WE DO
We believe food doesn’t need to travel far. We collect fresh, seasonal produce directly from Sussex farms and bring it to you through our mobile farm shops, making local food convenient, accessible, and fairly priced. Our supply chain is short, simple, and transparent. No unnecessary packaging, branding or certifications.
We’d rather focus on the farms, the produce and the stories behind them. We want you to know where your food comes from and who grew it. Our passionate and knowledgeable team hopes to reconnect you with the land, the seasons, and the farmers behind every item we sell. This is how we used to shop and how we believe we still should. We want you all to enjoy your shopping experience again and know where your food comes from.
OUR PRICING
We believe in transparent, fair pricing. Our mission is to pay farmers the true cost of producing good food while keeping it accessible for our community.
Buying local and direct offers great value — your money goes straight to the people who grow your food or to our team to keep the business running, with no middleman.
On average, 65p of every £1 you spend with us goes directly to the grower, and the rest covers running costs. In supermarkets, farmers often receive just 1–2p per £1 spent—the rest is lost to production overheads, processors, distributors, and retailer margins (Portsmouth University study).
WHO’S ED?
Ed, founder of The Sussex Peasant, grew up in the Sussex countryside surrounded by local farmers and fresh food. After studying Philosophy and Theology, and a stint in office jobs and playing rugby in Argentina, he chose to follow his real passion: food.
Managing pubs and restaurants revealed how hard it was to source produce with complete transparency while supporting local producers. In 2017, he bought a £1,500 horsebox, made possible by a generous local farmer. Gardening by day and working on the truck by night allowed Ed to build the first mobile farm shop and The Sussex Peasant began its journey!
MEET THE TEAM
The Sussex Peasant is now made up of an equally passionate group of people sharing a common ambition: to build a food system around local growers, fresh delicious, healthy foods and the local community.
We want to help build enjoyable and inspiring careers in food retail whilst putting local farming back at the forefront of a fairly priced food system.
If you share our passion for local food, happy connected community, have a positive can-do attitude, and enjoy working as part of a team, we’d love to hear from you.
Come to our markets to learn more, get to know us, and the local farms that grow your food.
